Does Plant-Based Aveda Color Cover Gray?
Share
Yes, Aveda plant-powered permanent color covers gray, and it's what we use for gray coverage every day. At Cut Above Salon in Middletown, NY, we're an Aveda Concept salon. How well your gray covers depends less on the brand and more on the formula. Your colorist builds it around how much gray you have and how stubborn it is.
What Does "Plant-Powered" Mean for Your Color?
It means a color line built with a high share of naturally derived ingredients. Aveda states that its permanent hair color is vegan and 96% naturally derived, measured by the ISO 16128 standard. You can read that on Aveda's hair color page.
We don't want that phrase to make you think the color is weak. It's still permanent color. It still goes into the hair and grows out at the root rather than washing away. For gray coverage, that's what you want.
It also means our colorists work with the same line every day. They know how each shade behaves on gray. That daily practice matters more for your result than any label on the tube.

Why Is Some Gray So Hard to Cover?
Some gray resists color because of its texture, not because of the color line. In our chairs, we see a few patterns over and over.
- Coarse gray can feel wiry and take longer to accept color.
- Temple and hairline gray is often the most stubborn, and it's also the most visible.
- Mixed gray, scattered through darker hair, can make one formula behave two ways on the same head.
None of this means your gray can't be covered. It means your colorist plans for it. That might mean a different formula at the front than at the back. It might mean color goes on the toughest areas first. We decide that by looking at your hair, not by guessing from a photo.
Your first visit is where we learn the most. We see how your gray takes the formula and how it looks a few weeks later. If a spot needs more help next time, we adjust. Most clients find the second and third visits settle into a routine that just works.
Full Coverage or Soft Blending: Which One Do You Want?
Decide this first, because it changes the whole plan. Full coverage gives you one even shade, gray and all. It's done with single process color, and it's the clearest choice if you don't want to see any silver.
Soft blending lets some gray show through on purpose. Lighter pieces or a softer shade make regrowth less obvious. Some clients pair this with highlights. Others choose a lighter base shade. Blending often means a less obvious line as your hair grows, which some people find easier to live with.
There's no right answer. Tell us how you want your hair to look a month after your visit. We'll suggest the path that gets you there.
How Do We Plan Gray Coverage With Aveda Color?
We plan it in a set order, so nothing is left to chance.
- We ask what you want: full coverage, soft blending, or a shade change.
- We look at how much gray you have, where it sits, and how coarse it feels.
- We check your lengths for old color, box dye, or fading.
- Your colorist mixes your Aveda formula for your hair and the gray in it.
- We apply color to the most resistant areas first, then the rest of the regrowth.
- We rinse, check the result in good light, and finish your style.

If your hair already has old color in it that's uneven or patchy, we may suggest a color correction before regular coverage. That keeps the new color from showing every old band underneath.
What Do We Send Gray-Covered Hair Home With?
We send you home with gentle care, because faded lengths make fresh roots look out of place. Wash with cooler water when you can and use conditioner every time. If your colored hair feels dry, these are the ones we'd hand you at the front desk:
- Shampure Nurturing Shampoo: a gentle everyday wash.
- Botanical Repair Strengthening Conditioner: a strengthening conditioner for your lengths.

Your Aveda Gray Coverage Questions
Is Aveda hair color permanent?
Aveda makes permanent hair color, and that's what we use when the goal is full gray coverage. It grows out rather than washing out, so you'll see regrowth at the root over time.
Will plant-powered color cover all of my gray?
In our chairs, Aveda permanent color covers gray well for most clients. Stubborn gray, often at the temples, can need a formula or application change. Your colorist will tell you that up front.
Can I switch to Aveda color if I've been using another brand?
Yes. Tell us what you've been using and how long, including any box dye. We'll check your lengths and plan the first visit so the new color blends with what's already there.
Is Aveda hair color vegan?
Aveda states that its permanent hair color is vegan. It also states that the color is 96% naturally derived, measured by the ISO 16128 standard.
Will my gray come out a different shade than the rest of my hair?
It can if the formula isn't built for it, because gray takes color differently than pigmented hair. That's why we look at how much gray you have before we mix, so the result reads as one shade.
Can Aveda color give me a softer result instead of solid coverage?
Yes. If you'd rather blend your gray than hide it, your colorist can choose a softer approach. We'll show you what that looks like at the consultation before anything is applied.
