What does each correction session involve?

Most hair that needs correcting isn't one color. It's bands: clean regrowth at the root, old box dye through the middle, and lighter, porous ends. We treat each band as its own job.

  1. We test a small hidden section first to see how the color reacts and how the hair holds up.
  2. Dark bands get lifted, or have artificial color removed. Over-light or patchy areas get filled with warm pigment so the next shade has something to hold on to.
  3. We apply in sections, often with different formulas on different bands, and check each one before rinsing.
  4. Tone goes on last, once the levels are even enough to read as one color.
  5. We blow-dry, look at the result in daylight, and agree on what the next session needs to do.

How do you protect corrected color between sessions?

Between sessions, your hair is mid-project, so treat it gently. Keep hot tools on a medium setting or lower, skip tight elastics on the ends, and air-dry when you can. Don't add any color at home, including semi-permanent rinses or color-depositing conditioners. They change what we're working with next time. An in-salon Botanical Repair Treatment or Damage Remedy Hair Mask can go in alongside a session to support strength. Once the correction lands, expect the most fade in the first few washes while the hair settles. Your first maintenance visit is often a gloss or a root service, not another big change.

Corrections at Cut Above go to Julie. She handles going lighter and fixing color that turned too brassy, and she works in stages instead of forcing a big change in one day. For larger changes she plans across two or three sessions. She tells you up front how many visits it will take, so there are no surprises halfway through. What counts as color correction?

Fixing color that came out wrong (too brassy, too dark, uneven), removing box dye, transitioning from very dark to very light, removing color buildup, or correcting at-home dye jobs.

How long does color correction take?

Most corrections take 2 to 3 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart. Some can be done in one long session. Severe cases (extreme buildup, recent black box dye) can take 3 to 4 sessions.

How much does color correction cost?

Honestly: it varies. We never quote without seeing the hair. Consultation is free and we will give you a real number before you commit to anything.

Will my hair survive color correction?

Almost always yes if we do it across multiple sessions. We use bond builders and stop if your hair is telling us to. Healthy hair is non-negotiable.

Can you fix any color?

Most cases yes. Severe damage may need to grow out before correcting. We will tell you honestly during the consult if waiting is the better path.

Do I need to wait between sessions?

Usually 2 to 4 weeks between sessions so your hair recovers. Some guests fit them closer together when the hair is in good shape.
