How Long Do Hair Extensions Last? Upkeep and Move-Ups
Share
Extensions run on two clocks. The first is how long a placement holds before a move-up. Depending on the method, that is usually a matter of weeks to a few months. The second is how long the extension hair stays soft, and that depends on your care at home. We set both expectations at the consultation, once we have chosen the method for your hair.
Upkeep is the part of extensions most people underestimate. Our guide to choosing an extension method covers how we pick a method. Here we cover what happens after it goes in.
What Wears Out First, Your Hair or the Extensions?
Usually neither wears out first. The attachment simply grows away from your scalp. Your hair grows a little every week, and the point where the extension is attached travels down with it. Once it sits too far from the root, the set stops lying flat and starts to pull.
The extension hair has its own lifespan. It does not get oils from your scalp the way your own hair does. So it depends on you for moisture, gentle brushing, and protection from heat. Treated well, it stays soft and moves like your own hair. Treated roughly, it dries out and tangles long before the attachment is due.

Why Does My Hair Growth Set the Move-Up Schedule?
Your growth rate decides how fast the attachment drifts down, so it decides when you come back. Some people grow hair quickly. Others grow slowly. Two guests with the same method can end up on different schedules for that reason alone.
The method matters too. Bonded methods, including the V-Light extensions we offer, tend to go longer between visits than a taped or sewn track. They also take more time in the chair when it is time to redo them. We choose the method at your consultation and give you a schedule built around it.
What Happens at a Move-Up Appointment?
A move-up repositions the extensions closer to your scalp so the weight sits where your hair can carry it. Here is how the visit runs in our chairs.
- Check the roots. We look at how far each attachment has grown out and whether any area feels tender or tangled.
- Remove the attachments. We take them out slowly, section by section, so your own hair does not snap.
- Detangle and cleanse. Shed hair collects near the root between visits, and we brush it out before anything goes back in.
- Assess the extension hair. We decide whether it is in good enough shape to place again or whether it is time for fresh hair.
- Reapply and blend. The extensions go back in closer to the scalp, and we finish with a blow-dry or trim so everything moves together.
What Shortens the Life of Extension Hair?
Most early wear comes from a handful of habits, and every one of them is fixable.
- Sleeping on wet hair. Damp roots rub against the pillow all night and the attachment points mat.
- Brushing from the top down. Dragging a brush from the scalp pulls on every attachment along the way.
- High heat with no protection. Extension hair cannot repair itself, so heat damage stays.
- Stretching the move-up. A few extra weeks feels harmless, then shows up as tangles at the root.
These are the products we hand over most often at the front desk:
- Botanical Repair Strengthening Shampoo for the weekly wash.
- Botanical Repair Strengthening Leave-In Treatment on damp lengths before you dry.
- Miraculous Oil High Shine Hair Concentrate on the ends, kept away from the attachments.

How Can I Tell My Extensions Are Due?
You will usually feel it before you see it. The attachments sit lower, small tangles form at the root, and the set stops lying flat.
Pain is a different signal. The American Academy of Dermatology warns that extensions can cause hair loss from pulling, called traction alopecia. Its advice is to take them out if they cause pain or irritate your scalp. If your scalp stings, feels sore, or looks red, call us at (845) 342-4247. Do not wait for your next visit.
Healthy hair underneath is what makes every set last. Our Aveda treatments can support it between visits. You can see finished sets on our Instagram.
Questions We Hear About Extension Upkeep
Can I skip a move-up if my extensions still look fine?
We would not, because trouble starts at the root before it shows on the lengths. As your hair grows, the attachment drifts down and pulls harder. Keeping the appointment protects your own hair.
Do extensions last longer on thick hair or fine hair?
Thicker hair can usually carry a set more comfortably, but fine hair does well too when the method and amount fit it. On fine hair we place less and watch the roots closely.
Does coloring my natural hair shorten the life of my extensions?
It can, if color is worked into the attachment points or the extension hair gets processed again and again. Tell us before any color visit so our colorists can plan around your set.
Can I swim or work out often with extensions in?
Yes, most guests keep their routine with a little extra care. Wear a loose braid, rinse out sweat, chlorine, or salt water soon after, and dry the roots fully.
Should I book my next move-up before I leave the salon?
Yes, that is the simplest way to stay on schedule. We tell you roughly when you are due at the end of each visit.
What happens when I want my extensions out for good?
We remove the set in the salon, slowly, so none of your own hair is pulled out with it. Then we look at the roots and suggest a strengthening treatment or a trim if your hair needs it. Please do not cut or pull extensions out at home.
